Bundala National Park

Location

Bundala National Park is located in the Hambantota District of the Southern Province in Sri Lanka. It covers an area of approximately 6216 hectares and is situated near the coastal town of Tissamaharama.

Ecological Diversity

 Bundala National Park is characterized by its diverse ecosystems, including dry thorny scrublands, lagoons, marshes, and sand dunes. This variety of habitats supports a wide range of plant and animal species, making it a vital area for biodiversity conservation.

Bird Sanctuary

One of the main highlights of Bundala National Park is its significance as a vital wetland habitat for migratory birds. The park is home to over 200 species of birds, including numerous migratory species that visit from November to March. These include flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, and many more. Bundala is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.

Wildlife

Apart from its avian inhabitants, Bundala National Park also supports a variety of other wildlife species. Visitors may encounter elephants, crocodiles, water monitors, deer species such as spotted deer and sambar, wild boars, and various small mammals and reptiles. It is also a significant nesting site for marine turtles, including the endangered loggerhead turtle and green turtle.

 Bundala offers safari experiences similar to those in other national parks in Sri Lanka. Visitors can explore the park’s diverse habitats through guided jeep safaris or boat safaris along the park’s lagoons and waterways.  Bundala National Park is designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, highlighting its ecological significance. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the park’s diverse ecosystems and wildlife, including measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts and habitat degradation.

The park provides visitor facilities such as visitor centers, restroom facilities, picnic areas, and guided safari tours. Additionally, there are accommodation options available in nearby towns like Tissamaharama for visitors who wish to stay overnight and explore the park extensively.
